Park Street School Association (PSSA)

Aims

This is the parent teacher association for the school. It comprises a committee made up of parents (mums and dads!) and is chaired by our head teacher, Mr Sturgess. All parents with children at the school automatically become members of the PSSA and anyone is welcome to attend our meetings, regardless of whether they wish to be on the committee. We meet in the evenings about twice a term to plan new events and review progress.

The PSSA has three main functions. Firstly, we organise a range of fund-raising events for parents and children so that we can boost the school budget and help to provide all those extra things that benefit our children and that the school has come to rely on.

Secondly, we organise events which are more aimed at bringing people together and having fun! Thirdly, we support the school staff by providing refreshments at various events in school, such as Harvest tea for our local old folk, the Christmas Carols and Mince Pies service and school sports days.

The PSSA members work extremely hard to bring all this about and are always glad to welcome new parents, ideas and enthusiasm.

Allocation of funds

Allocation of the hard-earned funds is decided in consultation between the committee, staff and head teacher. In recent years, we have made major contributions towards the IT systems that have been installed throughout the school and have bought seven TV/VCRs so that one is available in each classroom.

We have also purchased books for the library, new PE equipment and an exciting range of outdoor play equipment for our children to use at break times. Contributions are also made towards financing transport for outings.

Events

Our committee is always striving for new and exciting events that appeal to parents and children. Some of the events held in recent years include ladies and children’s fashion shows, a quiz night for adults, a family beetle drive, jumble sales, kids’ disco and grand summer ball. In the autumn of 2003 we staged one of our most ambitious events so far a charity football match against an ex-Arsenal pro-celebrity squad. This was hailed a fantastic success and raised a staggering sum of over £4000!

Our two other main fund-raising events are our Christmas Market and summer fete, both normally raising in excess of £2000. Both have become great traditions of our school and enjoyed by children, parents, and grandparents alike.

The PSSA also co-ordinates the sale of second-hand uniforms and tuck and cake sales at the end of each half-term.
